It was amidst this backdrop of innovation and creative synergy that as an enthusiast of ACF’s ethos and work, I had the privilege of crossing paths with the founders. My introduction to ACF came through my friend Ivan Diaz, sparking an admiration for their craftsmanship and a keen interest in meeting them in person. This opportunity presented itself in Frankfurt at a pre-wedding dinner for a friend, marking the beginning of a friendship, mutual respect and a shared vision for transcending traditional creative boundaries.

2016 first time connecting with Sam & Shaka

Meeting Shaka Maidoh and Sam Lambert, with their rich cultural heritages from Ghana and Angola respectively, was an enlightening experience, amplified by their humility and openness. This meeting laid the groundwork for a future collaboration that promised to seamlessly blend the realms of music and fashion. Our shared aspiration for collaboration materialized in early 2017 while working on the song “Kitendi” with Badi, recognizing a perfect opportunity to invite ACF to direct and style the music video. Their enthusiastic response to the song and agreement to collaborate was a defining moment, symbolizing the merging of our creative visions.

The production of the “Kitendi” video took an interesting turn. Initially shot in Oslo by Swedish director Lamin Daniel Jadama, a decision was made to capture the essence of our collaboration in Paris instead, adding another layer of cosmopolitan flair to the project.

In June of that same year, our collaborative efforts came to fruition in Paris during Fashion Week. This event was not merely about producing a music video but also about strengthening a friendship and professional relationship that continues to flourish. The involvement of Amah Ayivi from Marché Noir added another layer of depth to our project, contributing to what would become an iconic video directed by Gilles Geek. Enhancing the video’s distinctive style was a cameo by Fashion Academic Sissi Johnson, whose presence and signature afro perfectly captured the blaxploitation vibe we aimed for. Additionally, featuring jewelry designed by my mother, who had previously designed for renowned figures like Yves Saint Laurent, Renaud Pellegrino, John Galliano, and Gianfranco Ferré, introduced a personal and historical dimension to our styling, linking family heritage to contemporary artistry.

The collaboration on the “Kitendi” video marked a milestone in the portrayal of Afro Sartorialism within the music industry, celebrating cultural identity, creativity, and the unifying essence of art. This project transcended a mere fusion of music and fashion; it was a testament to the power of collaboration, mutual respect, and a collective ambition to push the boundaries of creativity.

As we continue to explore our creative paths, the bond between Boddhi Satva and Art Comes First, enriched by the cultural legacies of Ghana and Angola, stands as a beacon of inspiration and innovation. For those fascinated by the confluence of music, fashion, and culture, I encourage you to delve into the work of Shaka Maidoh and Sam Lambert. Their brand, Art Comes First, transcends the conventional fashion label to embody a movement, a philosophy, and a worldwide family of creatives committed to the essence of art in all its forms.

By embracing the ethos of ACF, we recognize the significance of collaboration and the limitless possibilities that emerge when creative minds unite. Art Comes First continues to lead by example, demonstrating that at the core of creativity is a community eager to challenge the norm and redefine the future of fashion and art.
